When training isn't enough...

We’ve all done it. Felt nervous, scared or anxious about a race or goal and convinced ourselves that next time will be different.

That with the right program, more fitness and more time, we’ll “finally” feel ready or good enough to tackle the new challenge or ambitious goal we have.

So we train and we sweat. We sacrifice sleep and time with our family.  And then the big day rolls around, the day when we thought we’d finally feel more confident, relaxed, comfortable and convinced that we belong — and the same old demons and doubts, nerves and fears threaten to swallow us.

We stress about all those missed training sessions and feel convinced they are the only thing that stands between us and our goal. We were supposed to feel more confident by now (dammit!) and yet, we struggle to enjoy something that’s supposed to be fun.

If you’re like me, you’ve tried everything to feel more confident.

We’ve ignored our self-doubt in the hope it will go away.

Believed that with more training, more fitness and more time, “one day” we’ll feel “ready” or “good enough”.

Convinced ourselves to buy all-the-things (shoes, clothes, bikes, packs and gadgets) ‘cause new gear always makes us feel better…for a little while until the doubt creeps back in again and we’re left wondering if we’ll ever feel confident.

We hate the fact we were supposed to be excited and motivated by signing up for this event, but instead we hate how it makes us feel and simply want it to be over and done with.

But fear and self-doubt don’t just disappear...

It’s a function of the way the human brain is wired (it’s not you - it’s all of us!).

So ignoring it or hoping it will disappear “one day” won’t work.

But there are things that can help...

*  Using practical, tried-and-tested-in-the-real-world tools and strategies. These will help you understand why you think and feel the way you do and (most importantly) change it. So you feel less anxious, more confident and able to enjoy your sport again. As the old saying goes, “what got you here won’t get you there”.

Hi, I'm Jen

I’m passionate about helping women to bring out their best. Because when you have the bravery and courage to chase your dreams, it not only changes your life but also the lives of your family and friends too.

If you’ve listened to the podcast I host, Sparta Chicks Radio, you’ll know I’m on this journey alongside you. I know how challenging it is to struggle with fear and self-doubt while trying to chase your exciting yet sometimes terrifying goals and dreams.

I’ve been involved in endurance sports since 2004 and have been coaching women since 2010. And over the years, I’ve realised what holds most women back - more than anything - is not the physical demands of your sport. It’s not how far or fast you have to run, swim, ride, hike or climb stairs.

What holds us back (myself included) is the mental, emotional and mindset side; the fear and self-doubt, feeling like you’re a fraud, that you don’t belong, aren’t ready or good enough or that you don’t deserve to be there and, in a million other ways, our mental state prevents us from giving, and living, our best (I even wrote a book about it!). 

This is why I created the Sparta Chicks Arena. 

It’s the group, tools and support I wish I’d had earlier in my endurance sports journey.
