Terra Roams on Sparta Chicks Radio

This week on Sparta Chicks Radio, you’ll meet the (appropriately named), Terra Roam.

And roam, she does.

In 2017, Terra completed the Happy Walk, a 16,000km walk - solo and without the assistance of a support vehicle - throughout Australia.

The walk took over 4 years to complete and raised funds for Lifeline and awareness about suicide prevention.

And Terra only has about 400-500m to go before she will become the first woman to walk around Australia, solo and without the assistance of a support vehicle.

For much of her walk, she was accompanied only by Dory, her bright blue and yellow custom-build barrow.

Just keep walking Dory

Terra’s story is of a girl who discovered a love of and connection with nature from a very young age.

But who didn’t realise until later in life that she had been using walking as a form of therapy to recover from the trauma she has experienced and the social anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) she has since been diagnosed with.

In this conversation, we discuss:

  • her earliest memories of walking and being out in the bush as a child,
  • her realisation that she had also used walking as a form of therapy,
  • the year, she “lost the battle” with mental illness,
  • how her therapist prescribed walking as “homework” between sessions,
  • how she manages her mental state if she can’t walk due to injury or illness
  • the logistics of the Happy Walk, including Dory and how she carried 45ltrs of water (that’s 45kg) in Dory on the 290km leg from Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia to Halls Creek,
  • what the Happy Walk taught her about herself and her strength,
  • why you’re never at the limit of your ability, and
  • the importance of being aware of how you process other people’s fears.

You may want to use headphones for this episode if there are sensitive ears around. While we don’t go into detail, there are references to mental illness, suicide, grooming of a minor and rape in this conversation.

This is in some ways a heavy conversation but also a light, inspiring and uplifting one too.

Terra laughs a lot in this conversation and is on a mission to bust the stigma our society has about talking openly about these topics and getting the help you need.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.
